A group of officers from the Cape Breton Highlanders inspect one of the first bren gun carriers issued to the unit. It was taken at Connaught Ranges, Ontario, in the spring of 1941. The battalion was training there at the time.

This is an informal photograph by a government photographer showing two members of the Cape Breton Highlanders pipe band in their tent, getting ready for a parade. Standing is Drummer Melvin MacLean from Sydney Mines, NS. Seated is Piper George Sutherland from Soldiers Cove, NS. By the end of the war, George Sutherland was pipe major of the band.
