This section contains five photos pertaining to the Change of Command ceremonies for the Cape Breton Highlanders in June, 1953. The retiring commanding officer was Lt-Col. Angus Norman MacDonald. He commanded the battalion from March, 1949 to June, 1953. The new commanding officer was Lt-Col. Carl Dauphinee Arnold. He commanded the battalion from June, 1953 to June, 1959, including the transition of the battalion from the Cape Breton Highlanders to the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton). Both men served overseas in the Cape Breton Highlanders during the second world war.

The Pipes and Drums of the Cape Breton Highlanders lead a parade. Directly behind the band, on the right, is Lt-Col. MacDonald (retiring), and on the left is Lt-Col. Arnold (new). Behind them are the troops, mostly Cape Breton Highlanders, but also a few women from the Canadian Women's Army Corps.

Change of Command Ceremonies - Inspection

Lt-Col. MacDonald (retiring) inspects enlisted men from the Cape Breton Highlanders. Directly behind him is Lt-Col. Arnold, the soon to be new commanding officer. Note the badger head sporran being worn by Lt-Col. MacDonald. The location is believed to be the old drill hall in Victoria Park.

Lt-Col. MacDonald (retiring) salutes during the Change of Command ceremonies. He stands between the battalion's colours. To his right are the Pipes and Drums. The location is believed to be the old drill hall in Victoria Park.

Change of Command Ceremonies - Dinner

The Cape Breton Highlanders are seated for a celebratory dinner. Lt-Col. MacDonald (retiring) and Lt-Col. Arnold (new) are seated at the head table on the far right. The members of the Pipes and Drums are seated at the table in the background. There are also women from the Canadian Women's Army Corps and young men in civilian clothes in attendance.
