Seated in the centre of the photo, 21st from the left, is the commanding officer of the company, Major Albert Avern Sturley.
Albert Sturley was born in Harbury, Warwickshire, England and was married and living in Windsor, NS, when he enlisted in the 193rd Battalion on March 1, 1916. At the time, he was a professor of physics. Prior military service included three years in the King Edward's Horse, a British cavalry regiment, and one year at Canadian Officers' Training Corps. He went overseas with the 193rd Battalion. When that unit was disbanded, Albert was transferred to the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion and to the Nova Scotia Regimental Depot. In July of 1917, he was taken on strength with the Canadian General List in France and seconded to the headquarters of the British 4th Army in the field, where he remained until the end of the war. Albert returned to Canada and was demobilized in September, 1919.
