Unidentified Soldier

185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders)

England

Circa 1917-1918

Studio portrait photo of an unidentified enlisted man from the 185th Battalion. He wears a khaki balmoral with cap badge and full length feathers, a highland cut standard British five button pattern jacket, a 1908 pattern web belt, sporran and a kilt. On his legs are red and white diced hose tops worn with puttees. He holds what appears to be a swagger stick. Although his sporran is an NCO style sporran, the man doesn't appear to have any NCO rank stripes on his arms. The "185" is clearly visible on his sporran. Of particular note is that he is wearing a 193rd cap badge as a kilt pin. This would probably signify that the soldier had originally served in the 193rd Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and had been transferred to the 185th Battalion in England when the 193rd Battalion was disbanded.
