185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders)

Aldershot, NS

1916

In the back row, 5th from the left, is Sgt. Wimburn Laurie Blair. The other men have not been positively identified.

Wimburn Laurie Blair was born in Onslow, Colchester County, and was married and living in Inverness, Cape Breton, when he enlisted in the 185th Battalion in April, 1916. Wimburn was 53 years old at the time and was a former police officer. He served in the Northwest Mounted Police during the Riel Rebellion in 1885. Wimburn went overseas with the 185th Battalion and served with them in England. After the 185th Battalion was disbanded in early 1918, he was transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion before receiving a medical discharge in June of 1918, mostly due to his age.
