They show variations in the look of the badges based on different manufacturers, varying metal content and finish coatings used during the manufacturing process, aging, and general wear and tear over the years.

Example 1

Officer Cap Badge

185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders)

1916-1918

Pictured above is an example of a standard three piece officer cap badge for the 185th Battalion. The badge has two lugs on the back. There is no manufacturer identified. The badge measures approximately 53mm wide x 63mm high.

Example 2

Officer Cap Badge

185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders)

1916-1918

Pictured above is an example of a standard three piece officer cap badge for the 185th Battalion. The badge has two lugs on the back. There is no manufacturer identified. The badge measures approximately 53mm wide x 64mm high. This example is showing some signs of greenish verdigris caused by atmosheric oxidation of the metals.
