HMCS St. Croix

Halifax Harbour, NS

Circa 1940-1943

HMCS St. Croix passes through the anti-submarine gate as she enters Halifax Harbour. The building in the background is the McNabs Island lighthouse located on Maugher Beach. The light was built on Sherbrooke Tower, one of the Martello Towers built in and around Halifax in the 1800's.

HMCS St. Croix's pennant number was 181. Each war ship had a distinctive pennant number painted on the side of the ship to help with visual identification at sea.

The four smoke funnels gave this class of ship the nickname "four stacker."
