This photo was probably taken at Camp Aldershot, NS, shortly before the battalion left for overseas in October, 1916. At the time, Robert was a sergeant in the Regimental Band of the 193rd Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders).

17th Canadian Reserve Battalion

Circa 1917

In this studio portrait photo postcard, Robert wears the uniform of the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion. A large majority of the men in the 17th Battalion were from Nova Scotia and disbanded Nova Scotia units. At the time of the photo, Robert was the drum major of the Regimental Band of the 17th Battalion. Note the small drum trade badge located just above the sergeant's stripes on his left arm. The 17th Battalion cap and collar badges are clearly visible in this photo.
