The photo was taken in the fall of 1916, shortly before Bill went overseas with the 185th Battalion. It was probably taken in Aldershot, NS. At the time he held the rank of sergeant.

This photo is cropped from a larger panoramic photo showing the whole machine gun section of the 185th Battalion.
Fourth from the left is Bill Laurence with the rank of sergeant.
Fifth from the left is the commanding officer of the machine gun section, Lieut. James Holland. He was killed in action on September 2, 1918, while serving with the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders).
Note the Lewis machine gun in the forground of the photo.
