In this studio portrait photo, Roderick holds the rank of captain. He has not yet received a cap badge or collar badges for the 185th Battalion which would be in its infancy at this point. He has just been transferred from the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and is presumably in Sydney to begin the recruitment drive for the formation of the 185th Battalion at nearby Broughton. Note the medal bar on his chest for medals received during the Boer War in South Africa.
