"A" Company was recruited in the Nova Scotia counties of Cape Breton, Inverness, Victoria and Pictou, from men who had experience working in the woods and in the lumber industry. In looking closely at the faces of the men in the photo, there appear to be a number of indigenous men in the unit.
Seated in the centre holding a cane is Capt. Murdock Dan MacKeigan, the commanding officer of the company. Murdock was born in Coxheath, near Sydney, NS. He served in the 94th Victoria Regiment "Argyll Highlanders," a Cape Breton militia unit, prior to the First World War and during the beginning of the war. From 1921 to 1927 he commanded the Cape Breton Highlanders and later served as commanding officer of the 18th Infantry Brigade.
