64th Battalion CEF

The 64th Battalion was a First World War overseas infantry battalion authorized in April, 1915. It was originally intended to be a highland battalion to be recruited from within Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Officers were selected proportionately from the three provinces. Due to recruiting requirements of other New Brunswick units at the time, the majority of the men taken on were from Nova Scotia and some of the 64th Battalion's newly enlisted New Brunswick officers were transferred to other New Brunswick units. The 64th Battalion mobilized at Sussex, NB, in August, 1915, and trained there for ten weeks before relocating to winter quarters and further training at Pier No. 2 in Halifax, NS. The battalion sailed for England on March 31, 1916. After training at several locations in England, the battalion was forced to send drafts of men to other Canadian units. In July, 1916 the remaining men were absorbed by the 40th Reserve Battalion at which time it ceased to function. On December 7, 1916, the unit was reorganized and a month later absorbed the 37th Overage Battalion. It was disbanded in July, 1917. The 64th Battalion is perpetuated by the Princess Louise Fusiliers.
