Sitting directly behind the bass drum is the bandmaster, Lieut. John Thomas Arenburg from Lunenburg, NS. John was 44 year old musician when he enlisted in the 106th Battalion in Truro. With the disbandment of the 106th Battalion in England, he was transferred to the 40th Battalion and later served in the 64th Battalion, the 26th Reserve Battalion, the 17th Battalion and the Nova Scotia Regimental Depot, all in England. He was returned to Canada in November, 1917 and was discharged from the army on January 9, 1918 as "surplus to requirements".

Standing in the second last row, 4th from the left, is Pte. Ralph Bramwell from Glace Bay, NS. For a portrait photo of Pte. Bramwell, taken around the same time period, click HERE.
