The photo shows officers and men of the 36th Battery in Sydney before they left for overseas. The seated officer with the large moustache, in the centre of the photo, is Major Walter Crowe, the commanding officer of the 36th Battery.

This is a photo of Major Walter Crowe, commanding officer of the 36th Battery. It was cropped from the panoramic photo above. Major Crowe was the driving force in the formation of the 36th Battery. He had pre-war militia service, having served in the 17th Sydney Field Battery from 1886 to 1907. He brought the 36th Battery overseas to England, but due to his age, he was 54 years old at the time, was replaced as commanding officer by Major Daniel Albert MacKinnon.
Walter Crowe was born in Truro, NS, on December 2, 1861. In later years he became a prominent citizen of Sydney, NS. He was a lawyer, judge and the sixth mayor of Sydney. He was also credited with bringing the game of golf to Nova Scotia in 1895, after having seen it played in the United States while on a business trip. A nine hole golf course was layed out in Victoria Park, Sydney and a golf club was organized. Walter Cowe passed away on October 12, 1934 in Sydney.
