This section contains three photos pertaining to RSM John Clarke, circa 1980's to 1993.
John Clarke joined the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton) in 1960 at the age of 22, and rose through the ranks to become the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Battalion from 1987 to 1994. With a strong interest in preserving the history of the unit, John began collecting photos, documents and artifacts pertaining not only to the history of the unit, but also the general military history of Cape Breton. After his retirement in 1994, his passion for collecting and preserving military artifacts led to the formation of the Cape Breton Highlanders Museum. John was curator of the museum until he stepped down from his duties in 2023. For his tireless work, dedication and many years of community service through the museum, in 2021, John was awarded an honourary degree from the Cape Breton University.

In 1931, an alliance was formed between the Cape Breton Highlanders and the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of the British Regular Army. This tradition was continued with the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton). In 1989, the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment celebrated its 300th anniversary. In July, 1989, two members of the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton), Major Michael Alteen and RSM John Clarke, travelled to England and represented the 2nd Battalion during the celebrations. Prince Charles was the Colonel-in-Chief of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment and RSM John Clarke was able to meet him.
