246th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) CEF

The 246th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) was a First World War Nova Scotia overseas battalion authorized in August, 1916 as a reserve unit to supply reinforcements to the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade. It recruited across the province and was headquartered in Halifax, NS. It later organized at Camp Aldershot, NS, shortly before the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade went overseas in October 1916. Officers and men from the battalions of the brigade who were deemed temporarily unfit for overseas duty were transferred to the 246th Battalion. The 246th Battalion was sent overseas in two drafts in March and June, 1917. Upon arrival in England, approximately half the men were transferred to the 185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders) who were training in England, and the other half were absorbed by the 17th Reserve Battalion. The remainder of the officers and men left in Canada were subsequently transferred to labour, forestry special service and other units. The battalion was officially disbanded in April, 1918. The memory of the 246th Battalion is perpetuated by the Nova Scotia Highlanders.
