Two Soldiers

17th Canadian Reserve Battalion

Circa 1918-1919

This is a studio portrait photo of two soldiers from the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion. On the right is 3189031 Pte. Clyde Emerald Hiltz. The soldier on the left is unidentified. Their 17th Battalion collar badges are clearly visible in this photo. The photo may have been taken in England or after the men returned to Canada after the war.

Clyde Emerald Hiltz was born in Marriott's Cove, Lunenburg County on October 6, 1896. He was drafted and joined the 1st Depot Battalion Nova Scotia Regiment in Aldershot, NS, on June 13, 1918. He went overseas later that summer, and while in England was transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion.  He was still with the 17th in England when the war came to an end. He returned home in the summer of 1919.

The identity of Pte Hiltz in the above image is based on the writing on the back of the original photo postcard and on the photo postcard below.
