Group of Soldiers

193rd Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders)

Circa 1916

The location may be Truro or Amherst, NS. Note the band members in the left background. The men have not yet been issued 193rd Battalion cap badges. They appear to be wearing General List cap badges.

It is believed that the officer in the middle of the front row, holding a cane, is Lieut. Robert Knowlton Smith who was born in Amherst, NS. He later served in the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion in England. He never saw service at the front.
