Sir Sam Hughes Reviews the

Nova Scotia Highland Brigade

Camp Aldershot, NS

June 14, 1916

Fourth from the left with white hair, hands behind his back and facing away from the camera, is Sir Sam Hughes, the controversial Canadian Minister of Militia and Defence during the early part of the First World War. He visited Camp Aldershot to review the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade. He is shown in the photo with members of his staff and officers of the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade.

Seventh from the left, wearing a balmoral with feathers, and shown in profile facing left, is Lt-Col. Allison Hart Borden, the commanding officer of the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade. He commanded and recruited the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and was later the driving force behind the recruitment of the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade.
