This section contains nine photos and photo postcards showing triumphal arches constructed in downtown Halifax to welcome back troops returning home from overseas in 1919, including the 25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Rifles), the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Circa 1919

The location of this arch is not postively identified but it is believed to be on the south end Barrington Street. Note the crest for the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) located just above the Welcome.

This arch is located on Cunard Street. The view is looking east with the Halifax Armoury in the background.

Circa 1919

This arch is located at the entrance to Grand Parade from Barrington Street. The view is looking west across Grand Parade and up George Street (now called Carmichael Street) toward the Halifax Town Clock and Citadel Hill. The inscription on the front of the postcard indicates that this arch was for the return from overseas of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

This arch is located on Spring Garden Road at the intersection of South Park Street. The view is looking east down Spring Garden Road toward the harbour. The spire of St. Mary's Basilica is just visible in the background behind the larger tower.
